The tour in the Rijksmuseum is the best way to be introduced to Dutch painting and Dutch history and culture. During a 2,5 hour visit you will discover the 17th Century Golden Age and how Amsterdam exploded from a little fishing village to become the most powerful city in the world. Much of the mechanisms put in place to run this new city-machine are still used today. It is astonishing to see how big the impact of this revolution is on our western and global society today.
More than this we will see this enormous change through the eyes of the Dutch masters: Rembrandt, Vermeer, Frans Hals or Jan Steen. Painters that observed their society with their own unique view. In the 17th century a very big step is made in the history of art. We will see what makes Dutch masters unique and how Rembrandt, formally called “The magician” in his early carreer earns his new nickname “Grandfather of impressionists”.
